Alexa, Google, or Apple — which smart home fits you?
Pick the wrong ecosystem and you’ll fight your house for years. Six taps — your phones, what you already own, home or rental, how much you care about privacy — and we’ll call it the way we do on install jobs.
Want it installed — and everything actually talking to each other?
We design and install smart homes and rental systems from Corolla to Ocracoke: locks, cameras, thermostats and lighting on one app, guest access sorted, and it all works before we leave.

What is Matter — and why it matters in 2026
Matter is the industry standard that Amazon, Google, Apple, and Samsung all agreed to support, and by 2026 it’s genuinely working: a Matter-labeled lock, plug, bulb, or sensor pairs with any of the big three systems. That means the ecosystem question is less of a life sentence than it was — you’re choosing which app and voice assistant you like, and your devices can come along if you ever switch. When buying new gear, the Matter logo on the box is the “keeps your options open” signal.
Can I mix Alexa and Google in one house?
You can — most devices happily register with both, and plenty of houses have an Echo in the kitchen and a Nest Hub in the office. The trap is running two brains: automations live in one app, schedules in another, and nobody remembers which assistant controls the porch light. Pick one system as the brain, let the other be a guest speaker at most. If gadgets you already own are misbehaving, our smart home troubleshooter walks the fixes.
Renting your home? You can still have a smart home
If you’re a tenant (not the property owner), skip anything that needs drilling or rewiring: stick-on leak and contact sensors, smart plugs, bulbs that screw into existing fixtures, and battery video doorbells that mount with adhesive plates all move out with you. Retrofit locks like the August fit over the existing deadbolt without changing the keys — landlord-friendly. The whole kit packs into one box on moving day.
Why vacation rentals lean Alexa
Four reasons we spec Alexa for most OBX rentals: guests already know it (no lesson at check-in), Echo units are cheap enough that a spilled margarita isn’t a tragedy, lock support is the best in the business — Yale, Schlage, and August guest codes managed remotely between turnovers — and Ring doorbells and alarms live in the same ecosystem for watching the property off-season. Owner privacy tip: no cameras inside, ever, and disclose exterior ones in the listing.
