Why smart plugs and bulbs need 2.4GHz WiFi

Nearly all smart plugs, bulbs, and many cameras only connect to 2.4GHz WiFi — never 5GHz. If setup keeps failing, your phone is probably on 5GHz: stand farther from the router (phones fall back to 2.4GHz) or temporarily connect your phone to the 2.4GHz band, then run setup. 2.4GHz also travels farther through walls, which is why it’s what these devices use.

Camera or doorbell offline — the checklist
  • Battery first — low battery drops WiFi before anything else. Charge fully.
  • Power cycle the camera (30 seconds) and the router.
  • Check signal strength in the app — weak signal at an outdoor camera is the #1 cause, and extending WiFi toward it is the permanent fix.
  • After storms: corrosion or water in connectors is common on the Outer Banks — that’s a hands-on repair.
Thermostat offline but heat/AC still works?

Yes — the thermostat controls your HVAC from the wall even with WiFi down; only app control is lost. Reconnect via the thermostat’s own Menu → Network settings. A blank screen is a power issue (check the HVAC breaker, and on Nest a missing C-wire), not a WiFi issue.
