How fast is your internet, really?
One tap measures your download, upload, and ping. Run it standing next to the router first, then again in the room where the internet feels slow — the difference tells you whether it’s the plan or the WiFi.
Runs in your browser against Cloudflare’s global network — the same servers big sites use. Takes about 20 seconds.
Speed looks fine by the router, terrible in the back bedroom?
That’s a WiFi coverage problem, not an internet problem — and it’s exactly what we fix with mesh systems and smart placement, anywhere on the Outer Banks.

Why is my speed test lower than what I pay for?
Three usual reasons: WiFi distance (speed drops fast through walls — test next to the router to compare), an old router that can’t keep up with a modern plan, or the device itself (older phones and laptops max out well below fast plans). Plans are also sold as “up to” speeds measured over a wired connection.
What speed do I actually need?
Rules of thumb per simultaneous use: HD stream 5 Mbps, 4K stream 25 Mbps, video call 4 Mbps, gaming 25 Mbps (ping matters more). A couple: 100 Mbps is plenty. A full vacation rental in July: 300+ Mbps keeps everyone happy. Upload matters for calls and cameras — 10+ Mbps up is a good floor.
Test by the router vs. test in the far room
This is the single most useful diagnostic: run the test standing next to the router, then in the room that feels slow. Big drop = WiFi coverage problem (fix with placement or mesh). Same low number in both spots = plan or line problem (call your provider). It’s the first thing we check on every service call.
