Outer Banks internet — quick answers

What internet providers are available on the Outer Banks?
Most towns are served by Spectrum (cable, up to 1 Gbps) and CenturyLink / Brightspeed (DSL). Ripple Fiber offers symmetric fiber up to 8 Gbps in Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills — and keeps expanding. Starlink and T-Mobile 5G Home work nearly everywhere and are the main options in Carova’s 4×4 area.
Does Carova have cable or fiber internet?
No — the lines stop at the end of the paved road in Corolla. In Carova, Swan Beach, and North Swan Beach your realistic options are Starlink (most reliable, with a proper install) and cellular home internet where the signal cooperates.
Is fiber available in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, or Duck?
Yes. Ripple Fiber launched on the Outer Banks in 2024 and serves Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills, with symmetric plans from 650 Mbps to 8 Gbps. It’s built street by street, so two houses a block apart can differ — check your exact address.
Where should the router go in a 3-story beach house?
Middle floor, as central as you can get it. WiFi loses roughly 10–18 dB every floor it crosses, so a router by the ground-floor demarc leaves the top-floor living room weak — the classic reverse-floor-plan problem. In practice a 3-story rental almost always needs a mesh system with a node per floor. Model yours with the WiFi Planner above.
    Do trees block Starlink?
Yes. Starlink needs a wide clear view of the sky, mostly toward the north at our latitude. Anything rising more than about 20–25° above the dish in that direction — live oaks, pines, a taller house — causes dropouts every few minutes. The fix is height: getting the dish above the roof ridge clears most OBX tree lines. Test your spot with the Starlink Checker above.
How much internet speed does a vacation rental need?
Budget ~8 Mbps per HD stream (25 for 4K), a couple Mbps per guest for phones, ~4 Mbps each way per video call, and 3 Mbps of upload per security camera. A rental that sleeps 10 with several TVs going and 3 cameras lands around 300–500 Mbps down and 20+ Mbps up. Upload is the sneaky constraint — cameras and calls push data out, which is why symmetric fiber is the comfortable pick where it’s available. Size your house with the Speed Calculator above.
How do I check my exact address?
Availability changes street by street. The FCC National Broadband Map lists every provider claiming your address — or call us at (252) 686-1451 and we’ll check it, then install and optimize whatever you pick.
