Diagnose Before You Spend

Speed problems have exactly three suspects: the plan, the equipment, or the WiFi. Testing in the right order tells you which one to pay to fix — and more often than not, it is not the plan.

  • Run our free speed test on a laptop plugged directly into the router with ethernet. This number is what you are actually buying from your provider.
  • Run it again on WiFi, standing next to the router. A big drop here means old or misconfigured WiFi hardware.
  • Run it once more in the worst room of the house. A big drop here is coverage — the fix is placement or mesh, not a bigger plan.

The Fixes, Cheapest First

Move the router (free)

Routers in media closets, behind TVs, or on the ground floor of a three-story house are fighting physics. Central, elevated, and out in the open can be worth 2–3x in the far bedrooms. Every wall — and on the coast, every sliding glass door with low-E coating — costs signal.

Reboot and update (free)

A monthly router reboot clears memory bloat, and firmware updates fix real performance bugs. If your router is rental gear from the provider and it is more than a few years old, ask for a swap — it costs nothing.

Kill the background hogs (free)

One phone backing up 4,000 vacation photos can flatten a 100 Mbps connection. Cloud backups, game console updates, and cameras uploading continuous video are the usual culprits. Schedule backups overnight and give cameras their own bandwidth cap if the router supports QoS.

Wire what does not move ($)

The TV, the desktop, and the game console do not need WiFi — every device you put on ethernet frees airtime for the devices that do. In a rental, wiring the smart TVs is the single cheapest review-proofing upgrade there is.

Mesh, when coverage is the disease ($$)

If the plan tests fine at the router but dies upstairs, a two- or three-node mesh system is the fix. Size it to the house, use wired backhaul where possible, and resist the urge to keep the old router broadcasting alongside it.

Before you pay for a bigger plan: if the speed is fine at the modem and bad in the far bedrooms, more megabits will not reach them either – that is a coverage problem, not a plan problem. On the Outer Banks we fix it with a proper WiFi and network installation: survey first, then node placement and wired backhaul.

When It Really Is the Plan

If the wired test at the router comes in well under what you pay for, that is a provider conversation — or a provider change. And if video calls stutter while downloads look fine, look at upload speed and bufferbloat, not the headline number. Our internet troubleshooter walks the whole decision tree, and the internet tools page has the calculators to go with it.

Quick Answers

Does a WiFi extender help?

Cheap repeaters halve bandwidth and create roaming problems; they are a band-aid for one dead corner at best. Mesh systems handle hand-off properly and are worth the difference in almost every OBX-sized home.
